Kelly Crum is a professor and interim director of the Division ofNursing at Bob Jones University. Most recently, Crum served as the director ofthe School of Nursing at Maranatha Baptist University in Watertown, WI. Crumearned a BS in nursing (1990) from Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, FL.She has an MS in nursing (1995) with a focus in maternal, child nursing,curriculum development, and nursing education from the University of SouthAlabama and postmaster’s coursework in women’s health nurse practitioner (1999).Crum is currently pursuing a doctor of philosophy in nursing (ABD) from theUniversity of Phoenix focusing on the nursing student’s experience withinternational service learning. Previously, Crum has served as an instructionalspecialist in the Health Sciences and Nursing Department at the University ofPhoenix Online and as a certified advanced facilitator. Crum has also served asnursing faculty at Pensacola Christian College and Piedmont InternationalUniversity in Winston Salem, NC. Crum has worked as a staff nursing in avariety of medical units at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem,NC; St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, WV; King’s Daughter’s Medical Center inAshland, KY; and Sacred Heart Hospital and West Florida Regional Medical Centerin Pensacola, FL. She served as the assistant director of nursing and directorof staff development at America Putnam Nursing Home in Charleston, WV.

 

CourseDescription:

Despiteindividual and federal efforts to curb drug abuse, healthcare professionals carefor patients who have drug problems every day. This course will offerinformation that may help the provider to understand the drug crisis inAmerica, as well as providing strategies to help healthcare professionals dealwith individuals struggling with addiction.

 

CourseObjectives:

  1. State the severity of drug abuse in the United States.
  2. Describe at least three elements of the national drug control strategy.
  3. Differentiate between club and prescription drug abuse.
  4. List five club drugs and associated street names.
  5. List the three most frequently abused prescription drug types and examples of each type.
  6. List three new emerging drugs of abuse.
