Functional Muscle Assessment and Corrective Basics

Instructor: Joellie Gonseth

Functional muscle assessment is essential in evaluating under-facilitation in individual muscles and provides the practitioner with assessments that aid in establishing or changing treatment plans or relieving pain.  Based on the theory that overly tight muscles are a compensatory response to opposing muscles that are weak or inhibited, these tests isolate one muscle at a time to look for those imbalances and provide a variety of tools to strengthen or correct the imbalance.  Because traditional massage may only be a temporary fix to chronic muscle dysfunction, the purpose of treatment is to restore full function to the weak muscles which is often the underlying cause in many chronic muscle issues.  In this way, the therapist can facilitate the appropriate range of motion, proper alignment, and muscle balance.  Additionally, since all muscles correspond to a specific meridian pathway, massage therapists can play an effective role in promoting wellness throughout several musculoskeletal and energetic systems.

Muscle Testing for Hip Weakness

Instructor: J. Nicholas Tortoriello

Athletes are always looking for a new cutting-edge approach to improve performance and avoid injuries at all costs. One way to do this is through the practice of kinesiology or muscle testing, a therapy technique that identifies imbalances by testing an individual’s ability to hold various muscles throughout the body against applied pressure. As a massage therapist, muscle testing not only reveals whether specific muscles have sufficient strength, it can also alert you to any serious imbalances. Your instructor, J. Nicholas Tortoreiello, will teach you how you can improve your clients’ range of motion by locating the weak muscles and improving on their function. This webinar will primarily focus on the hip.

Healing Hands Therapy for PTSD & Trauma

Instructor: Dawn McCartney

This course curriculum & protocol is uniquely designed modality that will educate, engage, equip & enhance any practitioners skill set when working with very specific special population clientele who are currently under the care of a Mental Health Practitioner/Doctor/Counselor or Therapist and have been clinically diagnosed with PTSD or Mental or Physical Trauma.  The course is vastly different from “the norm” of what we know as Licensed Massage Therapists/Professionals and will set a very firm foundation covering every aspect and clearly defining what PTSD & Trauma is verses the stigma attached by society and breaking the barriers of the “mental health stigma” one client at a time! This protocol is a unique fusion of dozens of modalities with real-life supporting evidence of how this protocol has achieved success over the past 5 years.  Palpation exercises and situational role-playing between students will enable students to work with varying scenarios and have the opportunity to learn from each other as well as have the opportunity to challenge each other with problem-solving solutions and have the 1-on-1 advice from an experienced educator in this field.   Students will learn (or simply refresh) themselves of “how-to”  perform guided meditation and breathwork exercises as well as 100% client-driven sessions to extensive Intake procedures and form, and at the conclusion of the class, students will be given the necessary information of local & national resources if they or their clients are ever in a Crisis Situation.

Trigger Point Therapy for Headaches

Instructor: Mark Bigelow

The vast majority of commonly reoccurring headaches are of muscular origin. Current research will be presented, using a full-color power-point presentation on trigger point development and referred pain patterns, showing the contribution of an active TP to the typical headache experience. This course will itemize all muscles that contribute a referred pain pattern to the head, face, and jaw. Trigger Point development will be explained and demonstrated using a 3D model of a sarcomere, the contractile unit of a muscle. Migraine headaches will receive special attention and, also what differentiates a migraine from any other type of headache. Each muscle has its own unique and documented pain pattern. Multiple, active TP’s at the same time can produce wide-ranging and sometimes overlapping symptoms. Treatment protocols will be demonstrated.
