About the Course

This course presents nurses with a basic overview of psychiatric disorders, discussing the current trends in diagnosis, treatment modalities, and medications.  The course covers therapeutic communication skills and cultural variances in the way mental illness is perceived and treated in adults and children.  The broad categories of psychiatric disorders reflective of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5) are also covered.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
  • Explore ethical, legal, and cultural issues associated with mental health care and treatment.
  • Describe components for obtaining a relevant psychiatric history.
  • Describe symptoms associated with common adult and child psychiatric disorders per the DSM-5.

About the Authors:

Nicole M. Heimgartner, DNP, RN, COI, is currently an adjunct professor of nursing at Mercy College and has been a registered nurse since 2008.  She holds a BSN from Spalding University, a MSN from the University of Phoenix, and a Doctorate of Nursing Practice with an emphasis in educational leadership from American Sentinel University. Clinically, Dr. Heimgartner is an expert in cardiovascular and community health nursing.

Kelley S. Madick, PMHNP, is a Family Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner with two private practices where she sees clients of all ages for initial evaluations and medication management. She also teaches psychiatric nursing for Stark State College’s associate degree registered nurse program and Kaplan University’s online RN-to-BSN program.

Cherie R. Rebar, PhD, MBA, RN, COI, is a professor of nursing at Wittenberg University and has been a registered nurse since 1995. She holds an Associate of Science in Nursing from Kettering College, a baccalaureate degree in education from Morehead State University, a Master of Science in Nursing, and Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, a post-master’s Certificate in Family Nurse Practitioner Studies from the University of Massachusetts Boston, and a Doctorate in Psychology from Northcentral University.
