About the Course

This course discusses the importance of interprofessional practice and coordination of care to improve the health of populations and also aid in provider-patient satisfaction, streamlining both education and evaluation across disciplines.  The course provides the historical and contextual framework with current, evidence-based information for healthcare team members on the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for successful interprofessional collaboration and teamwork. Core competencies for interprofessional collaboration are discussed. Interprofessional education is critical for ensuring that nurses are prepared to collaborate with team members across disciplines once they enter clinical practice and beyond. 

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
  • Discuss the evolution of interprofessional education (IPE) in health care.
  • Identify the core competencies required for successful interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) and teamwork.
  • Describe the methods used for IPE.
  • Identify the theoretical frameworks of IPCP.
  • Discuss interventions to develop effective IPCP.
  • Describe the tools used to measure IPCP competency.

About the Author:
Denise M. Burgen, DNP, MBA, MS, FNP, RN 

Denise M. Burgen, DNP, MBA, MS, FNP, RN is an assistant professor of clinical nursing at the University of Rochester School of Nursing in Rochester, New York. She received her BSN from Keuka College in Keuka Park, New York, her MS in family health from the University of Rochester's School of Nursing, her MBA from the University of Rochester's Simon School of Business, and her DNP in interprofessional collaboration and teamwork from the University of Rochester's School of Nursing. Her career of more than 30 years has spanned the continuum of health care. Dr. Burgen is a consultant specializing in quality and value in health care and has served in many C-suite positions, including Chief Quality and Innovation Officer for the University of Rochester's Home Care affiliate. Her role included involvement in system initiatives to add value to the patients served by the system.
