About the Course

This course provides evidence-based research guidelines for the management and treatment of patients with asthma. Asthma is a chronic disease that is increasingly being seen across all age-groups including: adults; older adults and school-aged children; and in occupational settings and pregnant women.  Healthcare professionals in virtually every setting can expect to care for patients with asthma.  The pathology of asthma, disease symptoms, environmental triggers, diagnosis, treatment, associated conditions, and health education are presented in the course, as well as the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program’s (NAEPPs) guidelines for the treatment and management of patients with asthma. Clinical Studies throughout present how best to improve asthma control, while minimizing associated risks, and present a clear methodology for healthcare providers to use. 

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
  • Identify asthma as a major public health problem across all age groups.
  • Discuss the effect of asthma as a chronic inflammatory disease.
  • Discuss the diagnostic approach to asthma and the nurse’s role in case finding.
  • Discuss the use of spirometry in asthma diagnosis and management.
  • Discuss the role of quick-relief and long-term control medications in the management of asthma and personal and family education related to their optimal use.
  • Discuss common asthma triggers as well as individual and family education regarding basic environmental control.
  • Identify the role of written asthma action plans in the overall plan of care and design characteristics that
  • enhance the usefulness of these tools.
  • Discuss the unique features of asthma in adults and how comorbid conditions affect the care of adults with asthma.
  • Recognize how a child’s stage of development can influence asthma management.
  • Discuss signs and symptoms of an acute asthma attack and the appropriate nursing interventions.
  • Describe how the course of asthma changes during pregnancy and how these changes affect asthma management.
  • Describe the relationship between obesity and asthma.
  • Recognize the proposed role of vitamin D in the treatment and management of asthma.
  • Discuss the implications of alternative therapies for asthma management.
  • Describe appropriate asthma teaching strategies and identify asthma education as a critical component of comprehensive asthma management.
  • Discuss resources available for asthma education and the importance of interprofessional and community collaboration.
  • Discuss the impact of the Affordable Care Act and its provisions on asthma outcomes as well as the influence of telehealth and mobile technology on asthma care.

About the Author:
Judith Quaranta, PhD, RN, CPN, AE-C, FNAP

Judith Quaranta, PhD, RN, CPN, AE-C, FNAP, is an Assistant Professor in the Decker School of Nursing, Binghamton University. She received her PhD from the Decker School of Nursing, with her dissertation focusing on asthma management of school nurses. Dr. Quaranta’s research focus is on barriers and facilitators for asthma management. As a trainer for the American Lung Association’s Open Airways for Schools curriculum, she has worked collaboratively with the Broome County Health Department, the Asthma Coalition of the Southern Tier, United Health Services Hospital, and the local American Lung Association to implement this program in local schools. Through integration of Open Airways into course content, undergraduate nursing students teach the program, allowing for sustainability of Open Airways and providing access to asthma self-management education.  Dr. Quaranta has been a pediatric nurse since 1979, received her certification in pediatric nursing in 1995, and earned her asthma educator certification in 2009. In April 2017, she was inducted into the National Academies of Practice of Nursing as a Distinguished Fellow for her work with asthma, with a focus on interprofessional collaboration.  Dr. Quaranta has received Individual Development Awards from Binghamton University, as well as a Transdisciplinary Area of Excellence Award to further her research in asthma. She has presented at multiple national conferences on the topic of asthma and self-management, authored manuscripts for numerous journals including the Journal of School Nursing, Journal of Asthma and Allergy Educators, Online Journal of Rural Nursing, Journal of Family Social Work, and Journal of Interprofessional Care, and authored chapters in textbooks on research and community and public health.
