About the Course

Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. This course examines the complexities of assessing, preventing, and treating childhood obesity and includes nutritional recommendations across the pediatric age span and evidence-based treatment interventions.  With an emphasis on addressing children at highest risk and the variety of factors that can influence obesity, the course also reviews family relationships and their role in obesity, as well as the role of media and marketing.  Behavioral counseling and how it can be used to motivate patients and families to make changes is addressed.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
  • Discuss the scope and effects of childhood obesity, including contributing factors, and the challenges faced by healthcare providers in their efforts to promote prevention and early treatment.
  • Discuss childhood overweight and obesity conditions, including pathophysiological changes, the assessment process, and immediate as well as longer-term health consequences.
  • Discuss the prenatal period and infant nutrition as the cornerstone of prevention of childhood obesity.
  • Discuss recommended nutrition for toddlers, factors associated with overweight and obesity, and appropriate nursing interventions to help parents promote healthy eating with toddlers.
  • Discuss nutritional recommendations for preschoolers and the challenges in meeting nutritional needs and establishing healthy eating behaviors for preschoolers.
  • Discuss the nutritional needs, developmental influences, and issues that affect weight parameters in children aged 6 to 11 years, along with the nurse’s role in supporting healthy nutrition for children in this age group.
  • Discuss nutrition recommendations and developmental influences that affect the promotion of healthy eating behaviors in adolescents.
  • Assist parents in choosing an evidence-based weight loss strategy for children aged 2 to 18 years.
  • Identify medical conditions that increase the risk of childhood obesity and future directions in addressing and treating childhood obesity.

About the Author:
Judi Daniels, PhD, APRN

Judi Daniels, PhD, APRN, completed her Master of Science in Nursing - Family Nurse Practitioner program at Michigan State University and earned a PhD in Nursing at the University of Kentucky in 2004. Throughout her nursing career, she has had a variety of clinical experiences. She is dual board-certified in family medicine and pediatrics and is on the faculty at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing. Her interest in obesity across the age span began in 2000 when she became aware of the growing problem in her clinical practice. Since that time, she has published on the topic, has presented at several state conferences, and has chaired doctoral projects on child and adult obesity. She was recognized in 2014 as an outstanding nurse educator for the state of Kentucky.
