About the Course

Health care professionals are at risk for substance use disorders. A nurse with a substance use disorder is a health care risk for safe patient care, as well as a personal health care risk for the nurse. This mandatory Florida course describes the significance of the problem and the signs and symptoms of substance use disorders in nurses. Employer strategies to recognize and address the problem are discussed. 

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
  • Describe the current state of the problem of substance use disorders among nurses. 
  • Discuss myths pertaining to substance use disorders among nurses.
  • Identify signs of impairment caused by substance use in the workplace.
  • Discuss employer initiatives to promote safety regarding the issue of substance use disorder in nurses.
  • Identify elements of the mandatory Florida reporting law, Section 464.018.
  • List the essential steps to make a report or referral for the nurse dealing with substance use disorder.
  • Describe employer initiatives to provide assistance for the nurse with a substance use disorder.
  • Identify treatment programs for practitioners whose functioning is impaired because of a substance use disorder in Florida, Section 456.076.
  • Explain steps in the return to work process.

Adrianne E. Avillion, DEd, RN, is an accomplished nursing professional development specialist and health care author.
