About the Course

Mindfulness, the practice of maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness, is a holistic way to reduce stress and improve overall well-being. This course provides an overview of mindfulness techniques, the neurobiological underpinnings of how mindfulness works in the brain, and evidence of the effectiveness of mindfulness in different areas of life. The course also discusses methods to foster mindfulness and describes how nurses can begin a mindfulness practice for themselves and their patients, including suggestions for guided sessions.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
  • Discuss mindfulness practice and its components.
  • Discuss how the practice of mindfulness alters brain physiology and function.
  • Discuss the ways in which mindfulness is used to support health and well-being.
  • Describe how nurses can begin a mindfulness practice for themselves and teach others to begin a practice of mindfulness.
  • Describe methods to foster mindfulness, including the use of guided sessions.

About the Author:
Ruth McCaffrey, DNP, FNP-BC, GNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN

Ruth McCaffrey, DNP, FNP-BC, GNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN, received her bachelor of science and master of science degrees from Florida Atlantic University, Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, in 1989 and 1996, respectively, and her doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree from Case Western Reserve University in 2000. She has been a practicing nurse practitioner since 1996 and a member of the Holistic Nurses Association since 2005. Dr. McCaffrey has served on the faculty of Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing Florida Atlantic University since 2001 and is presently director of the DNP program at Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia. She also serves on the editorial board of numerous nursing journals and has presented papers nationally and internationally on holistic and complementary therapies, including mindfulness. In 2017, Dr. McCaffrey’s article “Transformational Leadership: A Model for Advanced Practice Holistic Nurses,” co-authored with Humberto Reinoso, appeared in the Journal of Holistic Nursing.
