Audience

This course was developed to provide critical information related to safe medication handling and administration. The target audience is for all health care professionals responsible for handling, administering, and monitoring the administration of medications.

 

Course Overview

Medication safety is critically important to nursing practice.  This course provides guidelines for safe medication use, identification of safe medications, as well as rights and responsibilities of medication administration and monitoring.

 

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the significance of the Institute of Medicine's 1999 report on medication errors. 
  2. Define and distinguish between the following terms: safe medication, drug safety, quality issues, medication errors and adverse drug events. 
  3. Recognize each of the governing bodies involved in medication safety (FDA, AHRQ, IOM, USP, NCC, ISMP, JCAHO).  
  4. Identify the types of medication errors made by health care professionals. 
  5. Identify the ways a patient may be responsible for initiating a medication error.   
  6. Analyze the format for reporting a medication error to the Food and Drug Administration.  
  7. Identify the ways to promote medication safety for patients. 

About the Author

Maryam K. Mamou, BSN, RB, CWOCN

Maryam Mamou is a certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse, and is currently certified as a wound, ostomy and continence nurse.  She has worked as a staff nurse, unit coordinator, staff educator, field supervisor and director of nursing in home health care.  She has extensive expertise in wound and ostomy care in both facility and outpatient settings.   For the past ten years Maryam has also been involved in research, writing and journalism.  It is in this capacity that she has written about medication safety and the safe administration and monitoring of medications.
