Human Trafficking: A Personal View

Human Trafficking has been declared a public health crisis and the statistics of persons in trafficking is rising across the United States. Healthcare providers are in a unique position to report and assist survivors. Medical professionals are the first line of defense in combating the largest social justice issue of our times. Nurses are one of the few populations that connect with victims while they are still under the control of their trafficker. Identifying the signs of commercial sexual exploitation and reporting suspected human trafficking can lead to the potential recovery of countless lives.

This ANCC-approved course is taught by a sex trafficking survivor and subject matter expert. This course is designated to equip healthcare providers with the classified information that is exclusive to the profession. Tara Madison uses parts of her story pertaining to past interactions with medical professionals while she was trafficked, to help pinpoint missed signs and indicators.

Course expiration date: 8/24/2021

Appropriate prescribing practices are critical for all medications, but drugs that are considered controlled substances require additional attention. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), along with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), all have a role in determining the scheduling of prescription medications. As prescribers, it is critical that nurse practitioners understand not only federal but state requirements for prescribing all controlled substances. In addition, inappropriately prescribing opioids, resulting in their misuse and abuse, has led to many changes, including new safety and quality recommendations that must be considered. This course will provide a general review of federal and state controlled substance regulations and the prescribing of all controlled substances in general, as well as focus on clinical and safety considerations when prescribing opioid medications for acute and chronic pain not related to cancer.

Course expiration date: 4/10/2021

Trauma is not always apparent; it can include injuries without presenting symptoms and/or immediate signs. Providers working in health-care facilities that do not specialize in severe trauma may not be trained in trauma assessment, which can lead to increased rates of occult trauma. A trauma assessment should include history with clearly defined mechanism of injury; subsequent consideration of forces involved and potential injuries along the force trajectory; additional history; physical exam adapted to the patient including obese patients; and an imaging workup. Pneumothorax can often be missed, as can spinal cord injuries, which both have serious consequences. The nurse must maintain a high index of suspicion based on patient characteristics and injury patterns.

Course expiration date: 7/3/2021

Age-related illnesses are a growing economic and societal burden in the United States (US) and contribute up to 50,000 deaths annually. Ninety-five percent of these fatalities occur in the adult population. Since the development of vaccines for illness prevention and the focus on pediatric population protection, morbidity and mortality rates have declined. This has improved overall public health and has decreased resource utilization and associated costs. However, while the goals to achieve pediatric immunizations have largely been met, the adult population over age 60 has fallen significantly short of reaching national objectives for all 15 recommended vaccines. In 2010, the impact of adult hospitalization and treatment alone for four preventable disease entities, including influenza, pneumonia, herpes zoster, and pertussis, have contributed to care costs in the US that have neared $15 billion. Through a multi-faceted approach that focuses on access to care and prevention through aggressive immunization practices, benefits to our senior population can be met.

It is imperative that nurses and their interdisciplinary colleagues work together to establish a viable culture of safety in their organizations. This course presents the latest National Patient Safety Goals as well as strategies to improve the safety of health-care organizations.

Course expiration date: 12/20/2019

A headache in a child may be benign or it may signal a medical emergency. How can you tell the difference? What are signs and symptoms specific to infants, children, and adolescents? What in the history or physical exam is crucial to notice quickly and efficiently in order to provide the best care for a child? A nurse may be caring for an infant, child, or adolescent who presents with a headache in either an acute, emergency situation or in a primary care setting. This patient may have a history of regular, recurrent headaches causing a decreased quality of life for the child, or the patient may have a new, acute headache that may indicate serious medical condition such as a head injury, illness, or congenital disease. This course will explore recurrent headaches in children and adolescents, headache prevention strategies, and will describe the acute headache and to identify those with serious or life threatening causes (“red flags”). An exploration of the components of the pediatric history and neurological exam will be discussed. Various examples of primary headaches and secondary headaches will be described. After taking this course, the nurse will be able to identify red flags, describe signs and symptoms specific to children, and be able to distinguish between different types of pediatric headaches. Nurses who are experienced in pediatrics or are completely new to the pediatric population will equally benefit from this course.

As a result, this course is designed only to highlight the major categories of therapeutics by identifying key products and characterizing them as a class. In an attempt to provide perspective, an effort was made to provide highlights of clinically meaningful outcomes studies for the various drug classes.

Course expiration date: 6/13/2021

This education activity will provide an overview of assisted-living, as well as provide readers with information that will help them understand important aspects of working in this health-care arena. Medication management in assisted-living communities is one of the major tasks presented to nurses. Improper management of medications can lead to polypharmacy, adverse incidents, inappropriate behaviors, injuries, long-term irreversible damage, and even death. This course will review the tools to properly manage medications, as well as information that will help the nurse train unlicensed staff so they can contribute to risk reduction. As the role of the nurse in assisted-living expands to include higher levels of care, the nurse must have a better understanding of how these levels of care affect the treatments provided.

Course expiration date: 2/12/2022

This course is designed for both staff nurses as well as advanced practice nurses. Staff nurses, even those working in a medical area, will see patients diagnosed with psychiatric disorders. Due to medical and psychiatric comorbidities, these patients have complex prescription medication regimens. Staff nurses, being front-line providers, are generally responsible for medication teaching with the patient. Therefore, it is important for staff nurses to have a basic understanding of psychiatric disorders and the psychotropic medications used to treat these disorders.
For advanced practice nurses, the course is intended to support and enhance their knowledge of diagnosing psychiatric disorders and to increase their confidence for prescribing psychotropic medications to adult patients. In addition, the course addresses challenging clinical situations and strategies for appropriate interventions. Finally, case studies are presented, based on real patients, with recommended treatment and management strategies, in a discussion format, based on the author’s clinical expertise.

Course expiration date: 9/18/2021

Postpartum care can set the stage for optimal maternal and infant health. Unfortunately, maternal mortality rates in the United States have increased steadily over the past 30 years and continue to climb. In early 2018, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists released new recommendations to optimize postpartum care. These recommendations propose changes to the postpartum care timeline, elements, and care team. Nurses fill many of the care team roles. This course presents the new guidelines for postpartum care of women, as well as how the nurse is uniquely positioned as a crucial member of the care team. The course reviews the basic physiology of the postpartum period as well as the most significant medical complaints and complications that arise and contribute to morbidity and mortality. The nurse should be able to counsel pregnant and postpartum women regarding expectant postpartum care. This course also discusses the health policy changes needed to implement these new recommendations, and how the nurse can advocate for postpartum women as part of this process.

Nurses have an ethical and, in most states, a legal obligation to report suspected intimate partner violence, also be referred to as domestic violence (Brent, 2017; Yasgur, 2015). Such violence is a major healthcare issue that affects almost 6% of women in the United States every year (Dudgeon & Evanson, 2014). Men, too, are victims of intimate partner violence. According to the National Coalition against Domestic Violence (2015), one in seven men have been severely physically abused by an intimate partner. Facing situations of suspected intimate partner violence can be challenging for a nurse. The purpose of this course is to assist nurses to appropriately intervene in the best interests of the patient suspected of being a victim of intimate partner violence.

In most grocery stores, the labeling on “all natural” drinks insist that shoppers are about to imbibe a healthy product, even if the liquid is an unusual shade of blue. Natural versus artificial is also poorly defined in healthcare, which is why objective definitions must precede any discussion about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). This course explores the differences between CAM and traditional medicine.

Course expiration date: 5/17/2020

Diabetes is becoming more common in the pediatric population and nurses, as well as other healthcare professionals, have a responsibility to understand the key components of diabetes management in children and teens. Managing type 1 and type 2 diabetes means that the nurse not only provides direct patient care, but also education for patients and families in order for the patient to safely manage their diabetes at home and away from the medical environment. The nurse should not only be familiar with the ways in which to treat diabetes at home, but also the warning signs and reasons for bringing the child or teen to the hospital for immediate emergency care. The nurse will need to consider the child’s age and developmental stage when providing patient/family education and should inform parents of what to expect, physically, emotionally, and socially, according to the child’s developmental maturity. The nurse should recognize the unique stages and challenges of each age group when it comes to dietary management and the use of insulin, and also the psychosocial issues that may put the child’s life in danger, including possible substance abuse, eating disorders, and rebellious behavior that may occur during the years of adolescence. This course will cover the symptoms, risk factors, diagnosis, screenings, complications, and management of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in the pediatric population, as well as provide online diabetes resources that nurses can share with families.

Course expiration date: 11/8/2021

Approximately 30.3 million people of all ages in the United States had diabetes in 2015;  this figure includes 30.2 million adults 18 years of age and older. However, 7.2 million of these people were not aware of or did not report having the disease (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018a). According to the World Health Organization (WHO) (2017), the number of people with diabetes throughout the world has increased from 108 million people in 1980 to 422 million in 2014. Clearly, diabetes is a significant health problem in the United States and throughout the world. It is imperative that the health care community take aggressive steps to reduce the number of Americans who have the disease as well as providing more effective treatment so that persons with diabetes can enjoy their maximum quality of life. This education program presents information on both the impact of the disease and how to provide effective nursing care to those affected.

The explosive growth of the internet followed by the rise in popularity of social media over the last two decades has undoubtedly changed healthcare in America. The evidence is clear: a majority of patients are looking online for health information before they are showing up in our exam rooms and hospitals. About six-in-ten Americans say they sought health information online in the past year, accounting for millions and millions of online health searches that are only projected to grow. This internet game-changer has invoked mixed feelings among the healthcare community and has left many nurses wondering how to navigate patient care in light of the rapid advancement of online information available at every patient’s fingertips. What impact does this new online world have on the profession of nursing? And more importantly, how can nurses better help patients use the endless possibilities of the online world to improve their health? By sharing the story of www.kidnurse.org, this course will discuss the powerful ability that nurses have to share evidence-based health education online, improve patient outcomes and satisfaction, and publicly elevate the profession of nursing. Helping patients sort truth from myths to find accurate health information online, as well as legal guidelines and considerations for nurses to keep in mind will also be discussed. This course will discuss how to navigate this brave new online world together.
