About the Course

As the cost of healthcare in the United States continues to rise, changes to healthcare reimbursement have focused on the movement from fee-for-service payment to various reformed payment models. Enhanced awareness of the evolving healthcare industry in the effort to improve patient outcomes is essential for the nurse in any setting.  This course provides nurses with a foundation of the elements comprising the business of the healthcare industry, including how care is reimbursed. An overview of the current state of healthcare organizations and healthcare quality is provided as is content related to the cost of care, healthcare reform, care transitions, and consumer engagement. 

Learning Outcomes: 
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
  • Discuss the definition and goals of value-based care in the United States.
  • Discuss the financial impact of health care on the United States economy and how it compares with that of other high-income countries.
  • Identify factors that influence nursing clinical practice.
  • Identify methods for measuring clinical quality outcomes in value-based health care.
  • Discuss the effects of healthcare reform on healthcare consumers and providers.
  • Discuss two models of healthcare delivery and healthcare payments.

Patricia M. Noga, PhD, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, received her associate in liberal arts degree from Elmira College, her BSN from Skidmore College, her MBA from Suffolk University, and her doctoral degree in health policy from the University of Massachusetts. She is American Nurses Credentialing Center board-certified in nursing administration advanced and is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Noga provides leadership expertise and effectiveness related to professional practice and health policy issues, quality and patient safety, public health issues, and the healthcare workforce. She is nationally recognized as an advocate for healthcare quality and safety, uniquely focusing on transparency and placing critically important information in the hands of consumers. Dr. Noga serves as an expert resource to nurse leaders on how to understand, influence, and implement policy. She has provided strategic direction, leadership, and support to healthcare organizations through her roles as Vice President of Clinical Affairs for the Massachusetts Health and Hospital Association, Chief Retention Officer at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Clinical Director of Inpatient Services and Nursing at Tufts Medical Center, to name a few.
