It’s well-known that nursing is not a 9-5 job. For more than 1/2 of the respondents to the ADVANCE for Nurses 2016 salary survey, it’s not a 40-hours-per-week job either.
In the 4th rollout of data, we look at how many hours per week, on average, nurses clocked in overtime, whether that overtime is voluntary or mandatory and the annual salary differences between those nurses who claim to work extra shifts and those that do not.
13.3% of nurses who answered our survey work in facilities where overtime is mandated. Whether it is by choice or circumstance, overtime is only slightly lucrative for nurses.
42% of those who reported regular overtime earned $80,000 or more in 2016. That is compared to the 39.6% who earned at least $80,000 without logging any extra shifts.
