For the 15th year in a row, nurses are ranked highest for honesty and ethics
For the past 15 years, nurses have held the number one spot as the “most trusted” professionals based on results from the Gallup Poll Social Series: Lifestyle poll.
This year, a total of 1,028 American adults (aged ≥18 years) were randomly selected and interviewed over the phone from December 7-11, 2016. All participants were asked the following question: Please tell me how you would rate the honesty and ethical standards of people in these different fields — very high, high, average, low, or very low?”1
Overall, 84% of respondents replied “very high” or “high” when asked about nurses. Some of the other occupations participants were asked to rank included bankers, psychiatrists, police officers, clergy, and teachers.
Trust is a huge part of why nurses score leagues ahead of other professions year after year.
According to Pamela F. Cipriano, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, president of the American Nurses Association: “Trust plays an important role in the relationship between nurses and the patients we serve. ANA encourages nurses to draw on that trust to engage with consumers to improve their health and to advocate for patients and for the quality of care in this country. Additionally, I challenge those charged with making health policy at the facility, local, state, and national levels, to include the trusted voice of nurses at the decision-making table. Based on this survey, no other profession is held in as high regard by the public. And given nursing’s frontline perspective on healthcare delivery, we offer a point of view that is unmatched.”2
