Elite Continuing Education (ECE): Thank you for letting us get to know you a little better, John. Can you tell our readers a little more about yourself and your practice Jupiter Massage and Pilates?
Johnny Pilates (JP): I am known as Johnny Pilates , and I am the owner of Jupiter Massage and Pilates in Jupiter, Florida. I have owned and operated Jupiter Massage and Pilates for 15 years. I work as a Florida State Licensed Massage Therapist and a nationally Certified Pilates Instructor, here at my business.
ECE: You’re a busy guy! How many modalities do you work in?
JP: I work in at least 12 different modalities including Swedish, Neuromuscular, Stretching techniques and Hot Stone Therapy with Deep Tissue work being my favorite modality to practice.
ECE: I like hot stone therapy myself! Tell us about your journey into massage therapy.
JP: My journey into massage therapy came about when I was working as a personal trainer, and I realized that I wanted to be able to help my clients on so many more levels. I wanted to be able to address the whole body in order to help them feel stronger, more flexible, and pain free. That’s when I decided that becoming a massage therapist would allow me to address all the physical issues my clients presented with and ultimately help them achieve their wellness goals.
Today at my establishment we have a wide variety of clients with a range of needs including those who come to us for pain relief, relaxation, enhanced sports performance, and health maintenance. We look forward to the challenges that each day presents and working with clients on a personal level; taking the time to understand their needs and tailoring the massage to suit each individual.
ECE: That’s what it’s all about isn’t it? Tailoring each experience to each client. What are some lessons you have learned along the way?
JP: Over the years I have learned that how we treat our bodies and the environment in which we surround ourselves has a great impact on our health and happiness. The body reacts to pain, stress, and injury, but is just as perceptive to happiness, healthy habits, and a positive state of mind. As a therapist we can help to bring about the beneficial changes we wish to see in our clients, and guide them to continue their progress with self-care and awareness.
ECE: What are some healthy habits we could work into our lives?
JP: I tell my clients to stretch more, to work out consistently, get regular massages, stand with correct posture, and to eat right- all the components of a healthy lifestyle. Ironically, this guidance I offer my clients is often what I neglect to do for myself. I try as best I can, like we all do, but taking care of myself, when I’m trying to take care of others is often my biggest challenge as a massage therapist.
ECE: Glad to know we’re not alone in our struggle. What is the best part of being a massage therapist?
JP: I love the work that I do and take pride in the beautiful establishment that I run. We have a spa-inspired setting with a peaceful atmosphere, our clients are like friends and every day here is a day we each get to make a difference in people’s lives.
ECE: Any last words of advice for anyone considering entering the business?
JP: My advice to anyone considering entering this business is, if you truly enjoy the work you do, you will look forward to each day ahead and the new opportunities it presents. When you leave at the end of the day, you will feel good, with a smile on your face knowing you’ve helped many people and made new friends who appreciate your gift, give you praise, and put money in your pocket. Ultimately, if you truly love being a massage therapist it’s not work, it’s what you do!
