Vestibular Rehabilitation PT/OT Courses

Introductory Course: Introduction to evidence based interventions for persons with vestibular disorders

Advanced Course: Advances in the Diagnosis and Management of Persons with Central and Peripheral Vestibular Dysfunction

These courses presented by Susan L. Whitney, DPT, PhD, NCS, ATC, FAPTA, will aim to enhance the physical therapist and occupational therapist’s ability to diagnose, examine, and intervene using sound evidence in persons presenting with dizziness and/or balance disorders.  Lab practice will be provided so that the practitioner has an opportunity to practice skills commonly used when treating persons with vestibular dysfunction.

In the 1-day Introductory Course, all participants should be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and should start to feel comfortable with the examination and intervention skills for persons presenting with vestibular dysfunction.  Cases will be discussed related to diagnosis and management of persons with vestibular disorders. This program may be used as a prerequisite for Dr. Whitney’s Advanced Course being presented at JFK on Saturday & Sunday, April 25-26, 2020.

The 2-day Advanced Course will discuss central cases related to diagnosis and management of persons with vestibular disorders including persons with cerebellar disorders, migraine, traumatic brain injuries, and mild head injury/post-concussion disorders.  An update will be provided including the newest advances in BPPV and in the diagnosis and management of persons with peripheral and central vestibular disorders.  An overview of the clinical practice guideline (CPG) for persons with unilateral and bilateral vestibular hypofunction will be reviewed plus the latest CPG for BPPV.  It is strongly recommended that participants who take this course have experience in the understanding and treatment of vestibular disorders and rehabilitation or have taken the introductory course being offered by Dr. Whitney at JFK on April 24, 2020.
