Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Describe the anatomy of the upper and lower airways.
- Define the various cell types that make up the lower airway and alveoli.
- List the components of the alveolar-capillary membrane.
- Describe pulmonary circulation.
- Relate how air movement is accomplished.
- Identify and calculate the normal lung volumes, capacities, flows, and dead space volumes.
- Discuss the protection and defenses of the lung.
- Explain the role of pulmonary surfactant as it pertains to alveolar stability and expansion.
- Describe the factors affecting the diffusion of gas between alveoli and blood.
- Describe how oxygen and carbon dioxide are transported in the body.
