This intermediate-level course provides an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of Cognitive Therapy and a brief history of its evolution prior to describing specific cognitive techniques that are used both within Cognitive Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. This course for social workers, and psychologists reviews a foundational understanding of cognitive theory and techniques that can be used either within manualized Cognitive Therapies or to bolster therapeutic skills within other treatment frameworks.

Social Workers completing this course receive 3 clinical social work continuing education credits.

Psychologists will receive 3 CE credits upon successfully completing this course.

About the Author

Jennifer Housley, MS, PhD, received her master's and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology in Palo Alto, California. She currently works for the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) as a senior consultant for field implementation (Office of Patient Centered Care and Cultural Transformation) and as a clinical health psychologist. (The views expressed are the views of the author and not that of the VHA). As a former fellow of the National Center on the Psychology of Terrorism, Dr. Housley provided program development services for national organizations and served as program director and lead instructor for the Palo Alto Medical Reserve Corps.

Amanda Gilmore PhD, received her Bachelors in Psychology from Rollins College in 2007, her Masters in Psychology from The University of Washington in 2009 and her PhD in Clinical Psychology from The University of Washington in 2015. Dr, Gilmore specializes in prevention of alcohol and drug use, sexual assault and sexual risk behaviors among high-risk groups. She is a clinical psychologist and an assistant professor in the Mark Chaffin Center for Healthy Development and the department of Health Policy & Behavioral Sciences in the School of Public Health. She is also affiliated with the Department of Psychology and the Center for Research on Interpersonal Violence.
